10/4/23… Merced, California: Saturday Night, Colby Johnson & his team were in action at Merced Speedway. They made the last minute decision to head to Merced Speedway after Kings Speedway canceled their Friday & Saturday Night shows due to track conditions.
Colby started the night out with time trials, where he was the 5th of 13 Winged 360 Sprint Cars. They would have the wrong gear in the car, which would hurt Colby’s qualifying time. He laid down a time of 10.756, which ended up putting him 10th quickest overall in qualifying.
“We decided to come down to Merced & have some fun. Luckily Doug Lockwood put this deal together super late & let us come play. We qualified terribly & had the wrong gear in & it was a little free.”
That slated Colby to roll off from the inside of row three in the 5th starting spot. He would have a solid car during the heat race would it would be tough to pass. After starting 5th, he would finish the heat race where he started in 5th.
As they went into the feature, Colby would start on the outside of row five in the 10th starting spot. He was able to slowly move his way forward. The race would go green to checkered & Colby would go forwards three spots & finish the feature in the 7th position.
“In the heat race we were alright & we were just working on it all night trying to get it better. Ivan’s been tuning on the thing getting it dialed in. Then we got into the main & passed some cars. Started 10th & finished 7th, I could have been a little better & the car could have been a little better.”
Overall it was a solid night for Colby & his team. They got some valuable laps as they look to end the season with some solid runs. They were also able to keep it out of trouble & roll it into the trailer with a top-10 finish.
