12/1/23... Merced, California: Last Wednesday Night, Colby Johnson was in action for the final Winged 360 Sprint Car race of his 2023 season. Then on Friday & Saturday, he'd take the Wing off & run the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura Raceway.
Wednesday started out with time trials. He'd be the 16th of 28 cars to hit the track. Colby would end up laying down a solid time & timing in 9th quickest overall. After qualifying, he'd go out for the heat race where he'd start on the outside of the front row. Colby ended up falling backwards & finishing 3rd.
Next up was the feature, where Colby rolled off from the inside row five in the 9th spot. Starting 9th, Colby was able to stay inside of the top-10 as he continued to battle there. When the checkered flag fell, he'd finish the feature in 9th.
Going into Friday, they'd take the wings off to run with the USAC West Coast 360's. He'd start the night off with heat race action where he'd start 5th. Colby didn't have the heat race he wanted & would finish 6th. That put him deep in a qualifier where Colby would start 9th. He'd salvage a solid run & would go on to finish 5th in the qualifier.
Saturday Night, he'd start out in a B-main where he'd start 7th. Colby was in a solid spot as he just needed to make the top-4 to transfer. As the race went on, Colby slowly slipped backwards. He'd go on to finish 9th in the B-main & end his night & weekend.
Overall, it was a solid way to end the season. A top-10 finish at Merced, then a solid run at Turkey Night in Ventura. That would put an end to a solid season for Colby in 2023.
