4/26/24… Watsonville, California: Friday Night, Drake Standley made his first ever trip to Ocean Speedway. 20 Winged 360 Sprint Cars would be in the pit area for a great night of Sprint Car Racing in Watsonville.
The night began with time trials, where Drake was the 9th of 20 cars to hit the track as he went out around mid way through qualifying. Drake was able to put down a time of 11.677 which was enough to time in 8th quickest overall.
Drake went out for his heat race where he’d roll off from the outside of the front row in the 2nd starting spot. He got a great start & was able to pull out to the lead. Once in the lead, Drake pulled away & was able to win his heat race. That put Drake in the dash where he’d start in 5th. He had a good battle with Caleb Debem & ended up finishing 6th.
That put him in a good spot for the feature. Rolling off from 6th, Drake was able to move forward early. He had a good battle with his brother (Seth) & made his way to 4th. Unfortunately late in the race, he’d hit a rut & go into the infield. Drake was able to keep going but fell to 6th where he’d finish.
“Made the haul to run ocean speedway last Friday for the first time ever. I was able go out & qualified 8th out of 20 cars. Started 2nd in heat 2, got it done. Started 5th in the dash, had a good battle with caleb debem but ended up 6th. Had some tight battles with my brother in the feature & was up to 4th around most of the race. Around 5 laps to go I hit a rut & went into the infield. Finished 6th & was glad we learned alot & rolled the car into the trailer.”
It was a great first run at Ocean Speedway. Despite it being his first ever time at the track, Drake was fast all night long. He qualified well, won his heat race, & was able to battle in the top-5 for the entire feature event.
