7/12/23… Marysville, California: Saturday Night, Drake Standley was back in action at Marysville Raceway. He would put together what ended up being his best night of the 2033 season so far as he grabbed a runner-up finish.
The night started the qualifying. Drake would hit the track & look to lay down a solid lap and try to top 16 other competitors. He would lay down a solid time, but that only put him 8th quickest out of 17 Winged 360 Sprint Cars.
He then lined up on the inside front row position for his heat race. Leading them to green, Drake quickly grabbed the lead in the first set of corners. He went on to dominate the heat race & grab the win, locking him into the redraw.
“We made the last minute decision to change our plans and run marysville. Qualified 8th out of 15 cars and had a decent first lap and messed up on the second one. Started pole for the heat race and knew we had to win it to be in the redraw. I got the lead in the first corner and just walked away with the win.”
Drake started the feature from 3rd as a result of the redraw. Starting 3rd, he would establish himself in the 3rd spot for the first 15 laps. He fell back to 4th, before an incident with the race leader & runner-up drivers brought out the caution. That put Drake into 2nd where he finished as they called the race under yellow.
“Pulled the 3 so we started 3rd in the main. Ran 3rd for about the first 15 laps, then we had a green flag run and it was hard getting past the lap cars. On the white flag lap i was running 4th when the leader wrecked himself and one other car. That put me up to second after the yellow. I was praying for a green white checkered finish so i could have a shot to win it but they called the race over while we were yellow.”
It was Drake’s best night of the 2023 race season. He had good speed all night, won his heat race, and was able to bring home a runner-up finish to top off his night in Marysville.
