3/12/24... Marysville, California: Saturday Night, Drake Standley was in action in Marysville to kick off his 2024 racing season. 20 Winged 360 Sprint Cars would be in action, on Saturday for the first points race of the Marysville season.
Drake began his night with time trials. When he went out, the track would be very greasy & hard to find grip. He would struggle to get a good lap in & would end up timing in 16th quickest overall which put him behind ten 8-ball.
Going into the heat race, he was slated to start 6th & needed a good heat race run to get a better starting spot in the feature. After starting 6th, Drake found himself in 4th & charging for 3rd. Unfortunately, he hit a greasy spot on the track & falling back to 5th where he'd finish.
"Went to Marysville & shook the dust off for the first time this season. I struggled in qualifying trying to avoid the slimy spots & qualified 16th. I had to rebound in the heat & started 6th. I was charging for 3rd after the first corner but hit a slime spot again & the car pushed. I ended up only gaining one spot."
As they went into the feature, Drake would start in the 14th spot. He quickly went to work & trying to move forward. They had the car hooked up & Drake was moving his way forward. When the red came out, Drake was in 7th. Unfortunately under red, Drake noticed an issue which brought his night to an early end.
"Starting 14th in the main, the car was alot better & I quickly charged to around 7th. After we went red, I noticed that the torque ball had come off the torque tube, which prematurely ended our night," Drake added. "Super bummed knowing I had a top 3 car, but a part failure had stopped us from getting there."
It was a rough start to the season for Drake, but it came with some positives. Track conditions contributed to the tough start to the night, but Drake showed a ton of speed in the feature & will look to carry that into the season.
