5/1/23... Placerville California: Saturday Night, Drake Standley & his team would be back in action at Placerville Speedway for their 5th points race of the 2023 race season. With racing all over the state, a small but strong field of 17 Winged 360 Sprint Cars would be in action on Saturday Night.
Drake would end up being the 12th of 17 cars to roll out for single car qualifying. The car would end up being on the right side. However, despite rolling out deep in qualifying, he would end up 9th quickest overall.
"Qualifying went decent the car was a little tight but still ended up 9th."
That would put him on the outside of the front row for his heat race. Rolling off 2nd, Drake would jump out to the early lead. Once he would grab the lead, Drake would end up going on to lead every lap & win the heat race.
"That put me outside pole for the heat race and i had a good start and was able to lead the whole thing."
He would end up pulling the two pill & lineup on the outside front row for the feature. Early on, he would run behind the leader & hold onto second. Unfortunately, a few laps in he would get over the cushion & slip back to 6th. Drake would end up holding onto 6th & finishing there.
"I pulled a 2 during pill draw. Started outside pole next to Tony Gomes and had a pretty good start. I ran a very close 2nd for about the first 5 laps until I hopped the cushion trying to get more speed," Drake added. "I fell back to sixth and pretty much maintained that spot until the finish of the race."
Overall it was a solid night for Drake & the 54s team. He would show some pretty solid speed & was on pace for a podium finish if not for a small mistake in the feature.
