7/31/23… Marysville, California: Saturday Night, Drake Standley was in action at Marysville with their Winged 360 Sprint Car series. He would have a really good night, as he put together a charge to bring home a top-5 finish.
Drake began the night with time trials, where he was in the second group. Going out in the second group, Drake was able to put down a good time. That put the driver of the 54s 3rd quickest overall out of 16 cars for time trials.
That lined Drake up in the 3rd position for his heat race. Starting 3rd, Drake was able to quickly get to 2nd & begin to track down the leader. After a caution, Drake grabbed the lead on the ensuing restart & went on to win the heat race.
“Went out for qualifying in the second group and ended up 3rd quick out of 16 cars. That lined me up to start 3rd in my heat race and got into 2nd after a good start. Then on a restart, I passed the leader and won it.”
He would end up pulling the six for the redraw & starting the feature there. Starting 6th, he would get in an early race wreck & have to go to the back. From the back, Drake began to charge forward. Drake ended up working his way back to a 5th place finish despite having a broken Jacob’s Ladder.
“I was the first to put my hand in the bag and ended up pulling a 6 which was unfortunate. With starting 6th in the main, I got wrecked in the first corner by a spun car and ended up breaking the jacob's ladder. I decided to keep racing with it broke and worked my way from the back all the way to 5th.“
Despite the early race incident in the feature, Drake was able to salvage a solid finish & bring home a top-5. It ended up being a pretty good night of racing for Drake in Marysville.
