7/27/24… Monday & Tuesday, Drake Standley would kick off the Western Sprint Speedweek in Oregon. Monday he would be in action at Cottage Grove Speedway, before heading to Coos Bay Speedway on Tuesday Night.
Drake started the night off really good in Cottage grove with a 9th place qualifying run before winning his heat race. That put him into the dash where he’d start on the outside of row three in 6th & finish there as well.
The feature saw him roll off from the 6th spot. Unfortunately, he had some issues with his year offs & had to come to a stop. He’d tag the end of the field & try to make his way forward, but ended up finishing in the 15th spot.
“Monday we started in Cottage Grove. Qualified 9th which put us starting 2nd in the heat. Got out into the lead & was able to win it. Started 6th in the feature & unfortunately lost my tearoff post leading to me having to stop and try to clear my helmet. From there on we couldn’t seem to gain any ground & ended up 15th.”
He looked for a better run on Tuesday at Coos Bay Speedway. Drake kicked the night off by timing in 12th quickest out of 18 cars. Going out for the heat race, he’d start in the 5th spot but fell back to 6th late & finished there.
Drake made the feature but had to roll off from the 17th spot. He quickly went to work moving forward & gaining a handful of spots. Unfortunately after being put a lap down, he’d overdrive the car. He’d spin out & take out another car as well ending his night.
“Started 5th in the heat & stayed there for most of the race. I got loose coming out of turn 4 & got passed putting me in 6th. Started 17th in the main & quickly made up about 5 or 6 spots. We were running smoothly until the leaders got to me. Once I got passed I started driving the car a little too hard for what it could handle & spun coming out of 4. Unfortunately I took my brother out in the process who was running second.”
It wasn’t the Speedweek that they wanted as Drake would be done after Tuesday. He had a fast car on Monday but had some bad luck & then had a bad night on Tuesday , before deciding to end the week early.
