James Turnbull 14th in Western World Championships Finale!

By: Fast Time Media

11/8/23... Somerton, Arizona: Friday & Saturday Night, James Turnbull was in action at Cocopah Speedway for the Western World Championships. He'd take on some very tough competition during the weekend which was highlighted by a 14th place finish on Saturday Night.

James would begin the night with time trials, where a time of 17.283 was enough to time him in 19th quickest overall. He went out for the feature where he'd roll off from 2nd. James was fast during the heat race, but couldn't get by the leader & had to settle for 2nd.

That put James in the feature event. When it went green, the track would quickly take rubber. It would be hard to pass & with a few to go, James would have to pull off as he blew a right rear which brought his feature to an end.

"Just spent all night learning the track. Qualified alright made the inversion for the heat. Started 2nd & was faster then the leader. He kept sliding himself so I couldn’t get around him. Put it in the show & rolled around the back on a rubbered down track & blew a RR with 5 to go & DNF’d."

Saturday, James looked to have a better night than he did on Friday. He'd rip off a similar lap to Friday's qualifying & ended up 21st quickest overall. He'd end up in the toughest heat race of the night, and would end up finishing in the 6th spot. That sent him to the B-main where he'd finish 5th & transfer to the feature.

When the feature rolled around, James rolled off from the 20th spot. He'd quickly get to work as they had the car set up really well. James ended up moving forward over a handful of spots. He'd go from the 20th spot, to finish the night & weekend in the 14th spot.

"Qualified terrible on Saturday due to being way to tight. In my heat race I had all the USAC National Drivers so I battled with them & finished two spots out of a transfer. Ran the B Main and transfered. In the A Main we finally got a good set up in the car & picked off what I could from 20th & finished 14th."

It was a solid end to the weekend for James. He was able to get comfortable on Saturday Night, and charged forward to a 14th place finish. His final USAC CRA race of the season will be this weekend at Perris Auto Speedway!
