10/3/23… Saturday Night, Kaleb Montgomery would make the very last minute decision to head to Merced Speedway. After Kings Speedway postponed their race, Doug Lockwood & the Merced Speedway crew added 360’s to the Saturday Night card. Once he heard the news, Kaleb would put the 360 back in the car & make the trip.
With 13 360’s in attendance, Kaleb would be the 9th of 13 cars to hit the track for qualifying. He would end up laying down a pretty good time. A time of 10.564 was good enough to time Kaleb in 3rd quickest overall in qualifying.
He went out for the heat race & would roll off from the outside of the front row in 2nd. Kaleb got a great start to the heat race & quciky jumped out to the lead. He ended up pulling away from the field, as he went on to win the heat race.
“For qualifying we got 3rd quick, felt like we had the car to go quick time but the driver just didn’t run the right lines. The lap after the checkered I actually turned quick time. I wanted to win the heat race because it put me in the redraw position. That actually hurt me because we started 2nd & won the heat, the pulled a 6 invert for the redraw & started 6th in the feature.”
Kaleb then started the feature from the outside of row three in sixth after the six car invert. He quickly got into 5th in the opening laps. Unfortunately, after that it was hard to pass despite the track being very good. Kaleb ended up running in 5th for the rest of the feature event, and would come home with a 5th place finish.
“The race track was actually pretty cool tonight,” Kaleb added. “I felt like there was a top & bottom, just circumstances weren’t that great with us going 30 laps straight. Moving forward I think we learned a couple things on the car & my mindset was good all night.”
It was good & fun night for Kaleb & his team. At the beginning of the day, there was a good chance they wouldn’t be running on Saturday. By the end of the day, Kaleb would have a solid night, bringing home a top-5 & getting some more valuable laps
